Department of Special Services

The Special Services Department is focused on identifying and serving students with special needs in the least restrictive environment. Our special education staff is highly skilled and motivated to ensure that all students progress academically and socially. English as a Second Language

Supports are available for students Pre-K through Grade 12. Services are provided to those whose primary or home language is not English. Additionally, the student has not met English language proficiency. The program provides assessment, interventions, and monitoring services; designed in accordance with mandated state policy and procedures.

Parent Mentor

The primary purpose of the parent mentor program is to encourage the parents of special needs children to become involved in their child's education and to provide a liaison between the parent and the school district. As the parent of a disabled child, the parent mentor has a unique perspective and provides support, guidance, and information to other parents at a level of "parent to parent". The parent mentor helps guide a family through the systems within education, medical, or social service agencies. The parent mentor is a resource which helps families understand special education policies and procedures. The parent mentor provides a link between family and the school district is there is a breakdown in communication.

Information is disseminated to parents through newsletters, information packets and personal contact. The parent mentor attends IEP meetings at the request of the parent. Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973/ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The statute ensures that a qualified student with a disability receives reasonable accommodations and services necessary for the student to access education or school related programs and activities.
